VEDIC RITUALS FOR EVIL EYE PROTECTION

Did you know that evil eye protection charms are 5000 years old? Many ancient cultures like Vedic, Egyptian, Roman, Greek and others crafted recipes to protect from the evil eye, or buri nazar.

Evil eye is a belief that a person’s malicious or envious look can cause bad luck to another person. It can be done unintentionally as well, and is commonly believed to cause misfortune. Our ancients too held this belief and created oils, recipes, charms or totkas to protect themselves from evil eye. In the Indic system, there are some detailed rituals that protect one from negative rituals. Let’s explore some of them and show you how to incorporate them in your daily life. 

•    Burning camphor, clove and other purifying spices. Using camphor water to spray around the house is great to cleanse the space. Camphor removes stagnant energy and cleanses the space. You can use Pure Camphor pellets and burn them or put them in a diffuser. You can also use the Camphor spray, which is an energy cleansing hydrosol great for protecting from the evil eye. 

•    Wearing a black thread or kaala dhaaga, which often comes from temples or are energized with mantras. The colour has deep rooted significance in Indian astrology is worn by believers to avert evil eye. 

•    Using oils that are infused with specific ingredients like blue lotus, cardamom & clove. Essential oils are powerful because they activate the sense of smell, that impacts the limbic system or the emotional center of the brain. Rakshana is a coveted evil eye recipe that guards you and keeps negative energy away. This oil is sanctified and meditated upon and prepared through Vedic rituals. These ingredients carry a deep spiritual significance!

•    Using charms, yantras and symbols in the house as are old as the Vedic age. The Atharva Veda deals with charms, prayers and hymns for evil eye. We have lovely bag charms made in brass that depict the evil eye protection symbol and the Hamsa hand of protection!

•    Using Vedic Kajal, especially prepared using traditional methods. Kohl is used widely in many cultures to keep the eyes healthy, cool and to beautify them naturally. At Anahata, we prepare kajal by extracting the pigment from almonds, saffron and sandalwood, which are burnt in a ghee wick. This renders a natural & deep shine to the eyes. 

•    Saltwater baths are said to change energies around us and salts are essentially crystals. It is used it many detox rituals and Himalayan salts are excellent to add to your bathing ritual. 

•    You might find lemon and green chillies hanging across doorways of many Indian shops. These are thought to disrupt negative influences and deter evil eye.
