Dhanteras marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival:
The Devtas that are worshiped:
- Mata Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan, bringing fortune and prosperity.
- Bhagwan Dhanvantari, the divine physician, appeared holding the Amrit Kalash, symbolizing health and longevity.
- Kuber, the god of wealth, is also worshipped for financial stability and blessings.

- Clean your house and light a diya at the entrance to invite Lakshmi.

- Narak Chaturdashi / Kali Chaudas:
Also called Choti Diwali, this day celebrates the victory of good over evil - marking Shri Krishna's triumph over the demon Narakasura.
Narak Chaturdashi and Hanuman Jayanti are celebrated on the same day - Kartik Krishna
Chaturdashi, marks one of the two major occasions associated with Lord Hanuman's birth.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Place lamps all over the house. This is Alakshmi Deepam, a practice to ward off poverty,
misfortune & laziness.
Place a pure Ghee lamp in your home temple and offer prayers.
- Play or recite the Kanakadhara Stotram:
written by Adi Shankaracharya, this hymn brings about Lakshmi Maa’s generous flow of gold into your homes. Its verses evoke Lakshmi's benign glance and shower so much mercy that reverses poverty into abundance.
Try the Anahata Lamp oil specifically for lighting all the lamps in your home. You can also light the pure cow ghee Diya battis for this purpose or even use the fresh Cow Ghee.
Other Simple Rituals that you can start doing at this time:
- Morning or evening - sit quietly for about 20 minutes as you light a lamp.
- Feel gratitude and pray for abundance & balance in your lives.
- Recite Kanakadhara Stotram everyday during these festivities.
- Offer flowers, sweets, Prasad and prayers with pure intention.
- Finish with silent dedication praying that Lakshmi Maa’s grace will bless your home.

Specific Instructions:
From DhanTeras to Deepawali:
Place 12 earthen, brass or silver diyas in your home (puja room, corridors, windows) & Place 1 diya outside your entrance facing south: this is the Yama Deepam.
Make sure that you keep them lit during that particular day on the muhurat time to invite Lakshmi into your lives and also to ward off negative energy.
Auspicious must and can purchase:
Gold or silver coins/small jewellery
Metal utensils (brass, copper, silver)
Broom, coriander seeds, sabut- haldi, torans that are made using beads or cloth or metal. Please do not buy plastic or fibre.
Home Appliances and other electronic items.
Make simple items at home and offer these as Prasad to your deity and family or friends.
Keep it clean, simple and traditional.
Do not overspend on thing that are not needed.
