Ayurvedic Haircare as per your Dosha Vata, Pitta & Kapha hair types & remedies for imbalance of Doshas

Ayurveda says that the human body, like the entire cosmos, is made of the 5 primordial elements: Agni (fire), Prithvi (Earth), Jal (water), Akash (ether) and Vayu (air). These elements combine in different proportions to form doshas, which categorize individuals into groups- Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. This based on the individual’s physical, mental and emotional framework, as doshas indicate the general disposition of a person, food or biotic element.  Understanding which doshas we belong to can help us tailor our approach to food, sleep, lifestyle, habits, relationships, thoughts and emotions to better suit our inherent characteristics.

Based on the theories of Ayurveda, all of us have one dominant dosha– a type of bodily humour. An individual’s unique ratio of Kapha, Vata, and Pitta is said to define their Ayurvedic constitution– their personal roadmap to achieve optimal health and wellness. When these doshas are out of balance, it results in illness and disease, which manifests in many forms. Our scalp is a microbiome in itself and the dosha of your hair defines its primary characteristics and hence the products & ingredients best suited for you. If you understand your own hair correctly, you can customise your haircare for 10x greater results!

Vata Dosha

If your hair type is dominated by Vata dosha, it will generally be dry & frizzy with a high porosity. An imbalance in the dosha generally causes dandruff, split ends, frizz and rough texture.

You must focus on hydration & nourishment and use oil & gel based haircare products. Some cardinal rules to follow

    • Oil your hair 2-3 times a week using hair smoothening oils like the Mystic Hair Oil which has nourishing Himalayan herbs to strengthen & nourish the hair follicles. Oils with hair strengthening herbs like kalonji, tulsi etc work well.
    • Focus on moisture building products like masques & conditioners which will reduce dryness and split ends. Our Hair Strengthening Conditioner with flaxseed & fenugreek rebuilds hair bonds and adds shine & volume to the scalp.
    • Do not use shampoos with artificial chemicals, SLS, sulphates or parabens- they will dry your scalp, which is already very dry. The Keshamrit Coconut Milk Shampoo made with a gentle lye and predominantly natural ingredients to condition and cleanse the hair.
    • Always use a serum to detangle the hair & lock in the moisture. If you blow dry your hair without a serum it will become even more dry & frizzy. The Kesharasa hair serum at Anahata is one of India’s few silicone free serums which is great to control frizz and hydrate the hair.
    • Practice navel oiling to lubricate the 72000 nerve endings present in your body. It has great benefits for hair & skin health as well.

    Pitta Dosha

If your hair type is dominated by Pitta, you will have more heat & oiliness in your scalp. This would lead to hair thinning, bald spots, premature greying and scalp boils.

You must focus on scalp cooling and revival of the hair follicles. Some cardinal rules to follow

      • Oil your hair with cooling oils like coconut & aloevera, and for greying use oils with hibiscus. It is a myth that someone with an oily scalp doesn’t need to apply hair oil- hair oils are a must as they deliver essential nutrients and herbs to the follicles and cleanse the scalp. Our Aloevera Hair Oil and Hibiscus Hair Oils is excellent for Pitta dosha
      • To keep the hair naturally dark, using ingredients like Hibiscus & Brahmi which are found in our hair oils and scalp cleanser. The Hibiscus shampoo is excellent to restore hair volume and shine.
      • Focus on scalp exfoliation. Use the Keshamrit Hair & Scalp Cleanser, which is made with potent herbs and cleanses the scalp thoroughly. It will reduce oiliness & dandruff and refresh the scalp.
      • Focus on hair thickening practices in your lifestyle. Take up rituals like Marma Abhyanga, Yoga, Balayam and Pranayama to boost hair growth.
      • Gut health and hair health are directly related, so incorporating green teas with rose would be great for Pitta dosha. Practice navel oiling to lubricate the 72000 nerve endings present in your body. It has great benefits for hair & skin health as well.

      Kapha Dosha

If your hair type is dominated by Kapha Dosha, you will have thick, smooth hydrated hair but your pores may be clogged and scalp may be itchy.

You must focus on clarifying shampoos and gentle haircare products that will maintain your hair health without drying them up or causing product buildup on the scalp. Some cardinal rules to follow

          • Oil your hair with a lightweight but powerful hair oil like the Mystic hair oil which has a higher proportion of water than conventional oils. It is excellent for hair growth.
          • Use clarifying shampoos like our Jasmine & Sandalwood shampoo to unclog scalp follicles. Scalp exfoliation should be a part of your weekly haircare ritual. The Keshamrit Hair & Scalp cleanser is the right product for that.
          • Focus on de-tangling and smoothening products so that you can minimise hairfall while de-tangling your hair. The Kesharasa serum is great for that.
          • Use thick masques and conditioner only on the ends of your hair to lock in the moisture and add shine. Conditioners like the Lavender Conditioner & Flaxseed conditioner will reduce dry split ends and keep your hair healthy.
          • Lubricate your navel with Nabhira to maintain good gut health which is directly connected to hair health.
